City Conservancy is a social enterprise that has a mission to convert cities into Living Herbariums by designing sustainable landscapes using only native plants and strives to design using Design Principles of Botanical Gardens of the world.
Exposing urban dwellers to native plants of the region and getting them to bond with them with great understanding of the role of each plant is very essential if conservation has to happen in any part of the world. This can happen only if we showcase these plants in every garden in the city, making the city a LIving Herbarium.
City Conservancy does this through 3 initiatives:
- Urban Mali Network, which helps to set up home gardens using Malis who have trained in using only native plants using only organic pesticides and fertilisers
- Sustainable Land Care Course that enables scientists to understand the importance of becoming Social Entrepreneurs of Urban Ecology
- Empowering Garden Designs that helps to set up theme based gardens using only native plants. It helps landscape architects and horticulture professionals to learn about using only native plants in their plant palette.
If you have a stretch of land within the city, and would like to create sustainable landscapes using only native plants in it, do contact Dr. Vandana at +91 95350 25938 or send her a mail at firstname.lastname@example.org. She would be happy to set up an Empowering Garden there for you. No one will pass your garden thinking it looks “just pretty”. They will pause, to get drawn to plants, to discover, explore and get fascinated by the world of plants. They will become a native, learning about indigenous plants, their magical properties, ways of using them as home remedies, as food to nurture.
